Privacy Policy

Scope

This Privacy Policy explains how The Institute for the Future of Human Potential ("we," "us", "BetterSmarter[.me]") handles personal information on our websites/apps for readers worldwide, including the U.S. and Canada. Jurisdiction-specific notices appear below.

What we collect

Identifiers (name, email, IP); Internet/network activity (device, pages viewed, cookies/SDKs, approximate location); commercial info (subscriptions/donations, if any); inferences for personalization; and any info you send us (support messages). We don't intentionally collect sensitive categories (e.g., government IDs, biometrics).

Sources

From you; your browser/device (cookies/SDKs); Google Analytics 4; advertising partners; and service providers.

How we use information

To operate and secure the site, measure audience and performance, fix issues, personalize content, communicate with you, serve and cap ads, prevent fraud/abuse, and comply with law.

Analytics (GA4)

We use Google Analytics 4. We configure GA4 retention to 14 months for user/event-level data; Google-signals data is kept up to 26 months. Aggregated standard reports aren't affected by retention settings.

Disclosures

We disclose personal information to providers that host, analyze, measure, secure, email, and serve ads on our behalf under contracts restricting use (service providers/contractors). We also disclose to authorities when required.

Sale/Sharing/Targeted Advertising

We do not sell personal information for money. Because we run third-party ad network banners, we "share" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising and engage in targeted advertising as defined by U.S. state laws. You can opt out any time via the links below; we also honor recognized opt-out preference signals (e.g., GPC) from your browser.

Retention

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above and legal obligations. Current targets: contact/support messages 24 months; basic server logs 30–90 days (for security); GA4 user/event data 14 months; ad logs per partner settings. We delete or de-identify when no longer needed.

Security

We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the data.

Children

Our content isn't directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect children's data; if we learn we did, we'll delete it.

Your rights & how to exercise them

Depending on your location, you may request access, correction, deletion, portability, and to opt out of sale/sharing/targeted advertising; some locations allow you to appeal our decision. Submit requests via web form or privacy@bettersmarter.me; we'll verify and respond within statutory timelines.

Cookies & tracking

Manage preferences in Cookie Settings and your browser/device. Where required, a valid opt-out preference signal is treated as an opt-out for that browser/device (and your account, if known).

International transfers

We may transfer and store data outside your region (e.g., U.S./Canada/EU). We use appropriate safeguards as required by law. For Quebec, we provide transparency about tracking/profiling technologies.

Jurisdiction-specific notices

California (CCPA/CPRA)

Our Notice at Collection describes categories, purposes, whether we sell/share, and retention. We provide opt-out links and honor GPC.

Virginia/Colorado and similar laws

You have rights to access, correct, delete, portability, opt out of targeted advertising and certain profiling, and to appeal request denials.

Canada (PIPEDA)

We follow the 10 Fair Information Principles (accountability; identifying purposes; consent; limiting collection/use/retention; accuracy; safeguards; openness; individual access; challenging compliance).

Quebec (Law 25)

We identify below the person in charge of personal information and provide transparency about any identification, location, or profiling technologies used. By default, the most senior person is responsible unless formally delegated.

EU/UK GDPR

Legal bases may include consent (analytics/ads), legitimate interests (basic site security/operations), and contract (subscriber communications). Individuals have rights under Articles 15–22 and may complain to a supervisory authority. If we do not have an EU/UK establishment but target those regions, we will appoint an EU/UK Article 27 representative and publish their contact details here.
