While we can measure color using numerical codes that represent the activity of our cones, this trichromatic system fails to capture the essence and experience of color appearance. It’s like trying to describe the taste of a mouthwatering dish using just its ingredients. Fortunately, scientists are delving into the complexities of color perception, offering us a deeper understanding of how our brains create the dazzling symphony of hues that surround us.

The color of the year is Viva Magenta, ‘a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration’;i or Spanish Moss, ‘a midnight green that has a strong connection with the richness of nature’;ii or Raspberry Blush, ‘a vibrant orange–red shade that instantly brings joy to your home’.iii The kaleidoscope of options illustrates the importance of color, while the baroque names underscore a peculiar paradox.
