People with gluten sensitivity may face an unexpected foe: heart disease. Despite having fewer traditional heart risks, those with gluten sensitivity, which is an immune reaction to the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, might be more susceptible to developing heart problems. Just like how certain people have allergies where seemingly harmless substances like pollen trigger an immune response, those with gluten sensitivity experience an immune reaction when they consume gluten. Although it’s unclear why this immune reaction may increase the risk of heart disease, scientists are speculating that chronic inflammation caused by gluten sensitivity might play a role. To manage their condition, individuals with gluten sensitivity must follow a strict gluten-free diet. Additional research is needed to fully understand the link between gluten sensitivity and heart health, but this study brings this potential association to light.
