Have you ever wondered what it’s like to see the world through a different lens? Well, scientists are now delving into the fascinating realm of non-ordinary states of consciousness (NSCs) using an approach called neurophenomenology. It’s like peering through a kaleidoscope of the mind! Just as a kaleidoscope reveals unique patterns and colors when you twist it, NSCs induce shifts in our experiential contents and structures. This allows scientists to explore the dynamic and flexible nature of our experiences from multiple perspectives – the mind, the brain, the body, and the context we find ourselves in. By using a neurophenomenological (NP) approach, researchers aim to understand not only the neural processes behind these altered states but also their profound impact on our subjective experiences. It’s a powerful tool that can unlock the secrets of transformation in clinical practice. So if you’re curious to learn more about how hypnosis, meditation, and psychedelics can alter our consciousness and expand our understanding of the mind-brain connection, dive into the fascinating research! Get ready for a mind-bending adventure!
No contemporary unifying framework has been provided for the study of non-ordinary states of consciousness (NSCs) despite increased interest in hypnosis, meditation, and psychedelics. NSCs induce shifts in experiential contents (what appears to the experiencer) and/or structure (how it appears). This can allow the investigation of the plastic and dynamic nature of experience from a multiscale perspective that includes mind, brain, body, and context. We propose a neurophenomenological (NP) approach to the study of NSCs which highlights their role as catalysts of transformation in clinical practice by refining our understanding of the relationships between experiential (subjective) and neural dynamics.
