How Are Memories Stored in the Human Hippocampus?

Although I disagree with the claims of Suthana and colleagues [1], I welcome their comment, which advances an emerging and much-needed discussion about how memories are coded in the human hippocampus, how such coding differs from what has been described in other species, and how these differences may underlie key aspects of human intelligence. Contrary to what these authors argue, I believe that a careful consideration of empirical studies and theoretical arguments leads to the conclusion that there might be no pattern separation in the human hippocampus.
